Coke Zone

Once the customer had purchased a Coca-Cola product with the chance to win Olympic Games tickets promotion; they were required to search for the web address printed on the packaging in order to enter their unique code into the website to see if they had won event tickets.  The web address sent them to the Coke Zone which immediately started to run an animation which finished with a command to enter your code into the specified box.

The Coke Zone animation began with the concentric circle design again; this variation of the design had a black centre which connects the page together as black is used in the banner at the top of the page. The striped design then started to move around the translucent black box with animations of people doing sport appearing and disappearing within the stripes as it moved around the screen.

The animation of sport included a man serving a volleyball which then transforms into an animation of a diver. As the striped design moved around the page, the central concentric circles became warped as they prepared to disappear to allow the stationary screen for entering your unique code. As the animation began to disappear a diver leapt out from the colours and splashed into the band of colours below. The animation itself was quite simple; the movements of the people within the animation could have been created through motion tracking therefore making the animation more lifelike. The people within the animation are white in  colour; this colour is prominent against the dark background as the contrast is so severe. I admire the animator's use of the space they have been given. The animation flows well from one sport to another, for example the ball flies across the screen just and the stripes swipe across the screen releasing the diver from the highest point in the frame. As the stripes begin to fade the diver falls down the page and meets the coloured bands at the bottom, at this point the bands transform into a liquid which splashes up all around the diver until the are eventually engulfed by the coloured water. The colours and the simplicity of the animation are similar to the pictograms designed for the London 2012 Olympic Games; the connection is clear on the following stationary page as the pictograms are displayed.

This is the screen displayed once the animation has ceased. The viewer can finally take into account the full extent of the design of the webpage. The translucent quadrilateral which held the animation is an irregular shape, along with the tabs above it. The shape has been inspired by the London 2012 logo which has sharp vertices and irregular angles; Coca-Cola have therefore used the Olympic Games to influence their design. The colours of the tabs are complementary colours of red and green. The current tab is highlighted in green whereas the other two unopened tabs are red, this colour scheme means red will always be the dominant colour which is Coca-Cola's branding colour. The typeface used is the one employed throughout Coca-Cola's branding, consequently creating consistency. The typeface has been used in different point sizes in order to draw the viewer's eye to key words such as 'WIN' and 'GAME TICKETS'. The different point sizes help to emphasise these specific words and entice the viewer to play. Alongside the text are the pictograms I previously mentioned; the event for the current draw is clear to the viewer as the designer has made the corresponding pictogram the largest. The colour of gold has also been chosen as the background colour for the sporting event, this links the competition and event together as gold has a connotation of winning or great importance.

Once you look past the foreground you can see the city of London lit by low light. I think the photo was taken at dawn to represent how the Olympic Games are just beginning. The scene of London  shrouded by low light also makes the foreground the focal point as the colours are not so vibrant. The photograph itself is a panoramic view of the host city of London; the focus of the image being the Olympic Stadium where most of the events will be held, this photo their again links the Olympic Games and Coca-Cola together.

The whole webpage is balanced through the use of the coloured bands, concentric circles and  the Coca-Cola logo. The animation and the text take centre stage and therefore the main focus; surrounding the quadrilateral are the Olympic Ring coloured bands. One set begin at the top and then they are focused together towards the bottom; the second set of bands run from the bottom right along a quarter of the page. The focusing of the bands towards the ends give a sense of energy and distance. The bands could represent the athletics track fading away into the horizon.
